Professional internship in Lisbon

Portugal is a country with an interesting level of development. On the one hand it has a range of modern industries, and on the other it retains traditions and local flavour which are fast disappearing in other countries. Its language will open doors to one of the most important emerging economies in the world: Brazil. PUROMUNDO has contacts with companies from a whole range of sectors in Portugal, and can easily find an internship to meet your needs.

General

Requirements

  • Be between 18 and 35.

Location
Most companies are located in Lisbon.

Deposit
Participants should pay a €200 deposit when booking the programme. This deposit will be deducted from the final invoice to be paid before starting the internship.

Accommodation
We have plenty of options: homestays, hostels, and shared flats. If you stay with a family, you may be required to share a room with another participant.
Accommodation is on a self-catering basis, and everyone can use the kitchen to cook their own food and live independently. The type of room (single or double), cannot be used as justification to ask for a change in accommodation. All accommodation is high quality. You will receive information about where you are staying before your arrival in the host country.

Dates
PUROMUNDO needs to receive all the participant’s information at least 2 months before the start date to organise the programme.
Participants normally work between 38 and 40 hours a week. However, this may change depending on the company and department where the internship takes place.

Options: language course
If you have an advanced level of Portuguese you can start the internship immediately and you won’t need to take a language course. However, if you need it, PUROMUNDO gives you the chance to study in a fully accredited school in classes of up to 10.
Language courses run from Monday to Friday, with a total of 3 weeks and 60 lessons (hours). Courses are designed to give you the language skills you need for basic communication.

What we (think) we know, and what we don’t
Many of us think that we know Portugal, sometimes without having visited. We think of the sun, sea and sand of the Algarve, and Port from the North, but we often do not give it the same respect we do when we think of France, Italy or Spain.
However, there is a lot more to it than that. Portugal has an important textile industry which supplies many of Europe’s leading brands. Equally, it has its own rich culture, cuisine and tourist destinations, enough to satisfy even the most demanding visitor.
If you choose Portugal you will have the chance to work in modern companies which are open to the world and new technology. You will be in a very distinct environment, which includes traditional elements mixed with some of the most advanced in Europe.
Don’t forget that what you get out of your internship depends on what you put into it, and your attitude will play an important role.

Day-to-day activities
Once the organisation where you will do your internship has been confirmed, a plan will be drawn up detailing the tasks you will carry out during the internship period.

Acerca de

The city
Lisbon is known for being one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, and also a particularly charming one. What comes to mind when we think of Lisbon: the trams running through the streets of Alfama, the bridge across the Tagus, or the Baixa.
What the photos can’t show is a city full of life. Lisbon is above all a very pleasant city to live in, with an animated nightlife and excellent beaches not far away.
Lisbon lies over seven hills, with azulejo-fronted buildings and narrow medieval streets. There is no better place to see these streets than the Alfama area, crowned by Saint George Castle, from where you can get the best view of the city. Other notable areas are Chiado and Mouraria.

Weather
The weather in Lisbon is normally warm and sunny. The Atlantic breeze which blows across the city takes the edge off the heat in July and August. Winters are mild and rainfall is usually around 70cm across the whole year.

Traditions
In Lisbon there are several popular events throughout the year: Carnival is celebrated by children at school, at social clubs and in Bairro Alto. Spring brings the beginning of more events like IndieLisboa, an international alternative film festival and the Lisbon Book Fair, an open-air book market in Parque Eduardo VII. Throughout June, the city is taken over by the ‘popular parties’ in older neighbourhoods like Alfama, Madragoa, Mouraria, Castelo and others, which are decorated with arcs of flowers.
These celebrations culminate on the night of  Santo António, on the eve of the 13th June. Thousands of people take to the streets and make this the biggest party in Portugal, even bigger than the New Year celebrations.

The night begins with traditional troupes which form a procession down the Avenida da Liberdade, in which each neighbourhood fights for the prize for best choreography. In summer there are several theatre and performing arts festivals, such as the Almada festival and Alkantara/Danças na Cidade, as well as music festivals like Super Bock Super Rock and Rock in Rio, which takes place every two years.
In September, the biennial design festival and the international organ festival of Lisbon take place, as well as the Lisbon half marathon, in which tens of thousands of ‘lisboetas’ run across the Vasco de Gama bridge.
In autumn, Lisbon is home to DocLisboa, and the Lisbon Gay and Lesbian Film Festival.
